OUTDOOR LIGHTING MAINTENANCE GUIDE

Bulbs

• Replace burnt out bulbs immediately. Remaining bulbs on circuit will have an increased electrical load that will lead to them burning out prematurely. A single failed bulb can cause many more to fail shortly thereafter if not replaced as soon as possible.

• Replace bulbs with bulbs of the same exact specifications (voltage, wattage, base) to avoid overall system, fixture and transformer damage. Using the wrong specified bulbs can cause an overload of the system that will burn out the wiring, damage and melt the fixture sockets, and cause irreparable damage to the transformer.

• Do not touch bulbs while lighting system is on! Bulbs will instantly and severely burn your fingers. Always change bulbs with the system off.

• Do not touch pathlight bulbs with your bare fingers. Oils from your fingers will cause premature failure of the bulb. Use a lint free cloth or gloves to handle the bulbs. • A bulb will lose its intensity over time even though it has not burnt out. If overall system light output is less than desirable an option is to replace all the bulbs so that the optimum system light intensity will be obtained.

• Bulbs come in many different hourly ratings. Average bulbs are rated somewhere between 1,000 – 3,000 hours and are most economical. These bulbs come standard with your lighting system. Higher hourly rated bulbs such as 10,000 hours are available for your system; however the price is much higher than the lower hourly rated bulbs.

Fixtures

• Fixture lenses, both sides, need to be cleaned on a regular basis to allow for maximum light intensity output. Lenses will become dirty from moisture, dirt and debris. Use a lint free cloth with plain water to clean the lenses. If lens does not come clean with plain water then a glass cleaner such as Windex may be used on glass lenses only. Do not use glass cleaner on any plastic lenses.

• Do not touch fixtures while the lighting system is on! Always handle the fixtures with the system off. Hot fixtures will instantly and severely burn your fingers.

• Fixtures should be moved or redirected as needed to accommodate for changes in the surrounding landscaping.

• Always maintain use of the same size bulb base in the fixture sockets. Use of different size bulb bases will lead to bad electrical contact between the bulb base and the contacts in the socket itself. Sockets can become stretched out and this can cause a bulb to turn on and off intermittently.

Transformers

• Time clocks should be adjusted to coincide with the changing of the seasons.

• Keep main door securely closed at all times to prevent the outside elements from reaching the electrical components.

• Do not overload your transformer by adding more fixtures than your system can handle or by installing wrongly specified replacement bulbs.
